even if you're thinking about the impact a product has you're not thinking about the whole picture. there is waste in processing, packaging, and shipping that must also be considered. in fact one of the reasons many countries resist the introduction of fast food (and specifically McDonalds) is because of the huge amount of waste they create.

buylesslivemore.org is currently developing three models aimed at illustrating the amount of waste and resource consumption required for processing, packaging, and shipping of components and finished goods for three seemingly harmless and certainly ubiquitous items in our society. we are also working to further existing research that suggests that less than 1% of energy stored in gasoline used for cars actually moves them forward (starting with the fact that most cars use less than 30% of the energy in gasoline to move, the rest being lost to heat and simply spit out the tailpipe).
